Oh what? You think social media is a fad? Not worth your time? No point applying it as a marketing tool for your business? Well congratulations, I honor you with the name ‘idiot’.

You remember how in primary school we were told that once upon a time people believed that the world was flat? Oh, how we laughed at those fools!

Of course we know now, due the remarkable advance in technological science, that the world is round (yes you can argue that it’s not perfectly round, tectonic plates and that yah di yah). But that is science, so maybe I haven’t yet convinced you…

Ok, so how about the invention of the television! Remarkable right?

I mean you can’t imagine any household without at least one television nowadays. HOWEVER there was scepticism, there were doubts! It was too expensive… Would never catch on… What’s the point when we already have radio… Well. If scepticism had prevailed during these times then we wouldn’t have HD TV, we wouldn’t have 3D TV, we wouldn’t have video games!!!!!Don’t worry guys, because as you are well aware we have all of these things, and even though television has been around for 80 odd years, we are still trying to improve our ‘visual experience’

Let’s move on.

Now television, even though it is brilliant, it still only focused on outbound marketing, just like radio. Meaning you find out all the latest information about your ‘favourite’ brands and products through adverts telling you. You know, those annoying things in between programmes? ‘GO COMPARRREEE’ you with me? Good. No matter how loud you scream at your TV when that big fat guy starts singing, he just won’t shut up.

However sceptics, here is the good news! Social Media.

Now now, don’t get upset and throw a hissy fit. Listen up. Social media has been around for a lot longer then you think, social media is a type of inbound marketing. Meaning that the companies and brands will LISTEN to their consumers, and not only listen, but take on board what is said. The listeners will help, they will improve and keep on improving. And guess what, they will have a Twitter account and a Facebook page where their consumers can talk directly to people, not robots.

Still sceptical?

Remember how I said that if we had allowed the sceptics to win over the argument over the TV (not the remote, the actual invention) then we wouldn’t have such things as HD and 3D? Right well, imagine where social media can take us? Discovery of aliens? Hover cars? Robot butlers? Who knows the possibilities! But we sure won’t find out if some people decide that social media is not worth their time. If you sceptics continue to be sceptic then well… You could be saying no to the invention of the teleport.
